Their trips back home always included tasting forays to the eateries of Durgadbail and incessant recipe experimentations to perfect the robust masalas of Hubli street fare. When he fell ill, she set up a small business catering Uttara Karnataka meals out of their home in South Bengaluru to support the family. Unfortunately, he passed on, but Bhagya Kulkarni was determined to fulfil their dream, and thus was born Agraane Kitchen, a tiny shop that serves up the Durgadbail girmit, mirchi, avalakki usli, bun bonda, cut mirchi, etc., in addition to typical breakfast offerings and an austere but wholesome jowar rotti meal during lunch. I visit them on a rainy evening to savour the spicy, snacky street fare that I missed on my recent Hubli expedition, and to also support this enterprise that in a manner of speaking, is this brave lady’s culinary tribute to her late husband.
